The other day it dawned on me that we've been in Hong Kong for over a year, 15 months to be exact, and in this city that never sleeps it's easy to get busy without stopping for a second to reflect. So, here are some of my reflections: 1. Learn to look up! - I'll admit I still struggle with this one. Coming from Europe and then living in Dubai, where everything, or 90% of it, is on the ground floor, looking up is not the first thing I thought of when moving to Hong Kong. But I have learnt that it's a must do! If you stop at what you see at ground level, you may miss lots of wonderful stores and restaurants. So point your nose to the sky & explore!
2. English language is not that popular. - English being widely spoken in Hong Kong a common misconception non-residents have. I did too. Sure, when you go to malls and restaurants especially in Central, you won't encounter major problems, but step out of that area and the fun begins. Just relax and go with the flow, alternatively Google translate becomes your BFF, especially at the supermarket! 3. Golden Week. - Before moving to Hong Kong I never heard things like Golden Week, or Thankful Week, but now I'm a pro on these subjects. The only thing that I find frustrating it's to read atrociously written (in English of course) marketing communications and I constantly ask myself: "Who signed THIS off?!" 4. Art is everywhere. - Hong Kong is a melting pot of art. Whether it's an art exhibition of murals, the buildings' skyline, or a stationary & crafts exhibition at your local mall, you are never far away from art. Let it absorb you and if you are artistically inclined, in any shape or form, this is the right place to let your inner-arty-self loose!
